Benefits of Boarding

Leaving home to attend a boarding school often marks an important transition in a young person's life. It is a step towards adulthood and self-reliance, which is encouraged within the stimulating and supportive environment of Brockwood.

Morning Meeting

Each School day begins with the Morning Meeting. Students and staff sit quietly for 10 minutes in the Assembly Hall; occasionally someone reads a poem or plays music. The intention of Morning Meeting is to begin the day quietly together and to encourage self-reflection.

Food at Brockwood

We take a great deal of care preparing meals, which are all vegetarian. Wherever possible, organic ingredients are used from our own large organic vegetable garden. Students assist in the care of the garden, helping with the planting and harvesting.

The Rooms

In general, the girls live on the upstairs floors of the main house and the boys live in separate building called the Cloisters. Teachers and other staff members live side by side and look after the students living in that area.

Will I have my own Room?

About half the students have their own rooms, but usually a first year student will share with one or two others to encourage social interaction and foster friendships.

Weekends

The Brockwood weekend is on Tuesday and Wednesday. This ensures that we are in full session on Saturday and Sunday when most guests and visiting teachers are able to be here. We then have free time during the week when shops, galleries and theatres are less crowded. Students may leave the grounds on the weekends, but staying out overnight requires the approval of parent(s) and the Senior Tutor.

How do we care?

Tutor System

This is a well-established system of pastoral care in which each student is given personal attention and assistance by a staff member. The tutor is responsible for the overall well being of the student, and it is often through this relationship that students are encouraged to explore the deeper intentions of Brockwood and the bearing these have on their lives.

School Agreements

In order to live together well and in the spirit of the School's intentions, it is necessary to agree to and uphold some common behavioral guidelines . The Agreements are reviewed every year by staff members and students, and can change.

The right kind of education does not merely prepare you to get a job or to climb the ladder of success, but it helps you to think and gives you space for your mind to grow so that it is not bound by any belief, by any fear.
