Inwoods is a small school that seeks to provide an environment that fosters the development of children who are deeply sensitive to others and to nature and have inquiring and attentive minds. Education, to us, means far more than the mere acquisition of knowledge. Learning is viewed as a joyous process whereby both teacher and child discover together. We attempt to nurture each child’s individuality and creativity, encourage questioning, and keep alive their enthusiasm for academics as well as non-academic activities. We want children to excel out of a true love for the subject, without fear or pressure.
Time is provided for many activities that are not normally included in schools. We value activities that are hands-on and those that bring about a closeness with nature. Competition and comparison are discouraged and children are not subjected to standardised tests. When conflicts arise, they are discussed openly and sensitively together, without resorting to a system of reward and punishment. Our aim is to create a space where a child can flower and his or her intelligence can be awakened.
Inwoods Small School guides the children on their journey through the early years of play and wonder into the older years of junior school. We assist them to find their place in the world and in the process we keep alive their natural curiosity and aspire to make learning joyful and significant to life. We see our school, in a naturally beautiful setting, as a place where we can relax enough to examine our relationships to nature, ourselves, one another, and the world. |
